NOKOTA
who are you ?

The Nokota horse descends from the free-roaming herds of the Badlands in North Dakota, linked to Sitting Bull’s legendary war buffalo horses.
In the 20th century, part of these horses were inadvertently enclosed within Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
In the mid 70’s, TRNP wanted to introduce domestic breeds.
They organised round up to eliminate the wild horses.
That’s when a group of passionate individuals, including the Kuntz brothers, carefully acquired these horses to preserve their genetics.
A pedigree registry was created to preserve the genetics for future study, in partnership with Cornell University school of Equine Studies with a permanent biobank of 94 blood samples.
Thanks to their tireless efforts, the Nokota is now identified as a distinct breed, often mistaken for the Mustang, the Nokota is totally different in its history, genetic heritage, relationship with humans, and behavior.

A HORSE SHAPED BY FREEDOM
Nokota horses evolved primarily in herds, across vast open landscapes, within an environment that respects their social structure and natural way of life. The harsh conditions they evolved in shaped a horse that is hardy, resilient, thoughtful, and gifted with an incredible emotional intelligence.
This life condition is essential, it allows the horse to preserve :
-
a stable social structure with rich body language
-
a strong emotional intelligence
-
a high immune system
THE NOKOTA HORSE IS A QUIET FORCE
They observe and analyze before acting while maintaining natural awareness. They are curious and playfull. The bonds they form within their herd are strong, lasting, and deeply rooted.
This same relational quality merges with humans. Once trust is earned through respect and without pressure.

CURRENT SITUATION

Today, there are less than 500 Nokota horses 100% foundation worldwide. An extremely limited, fragile, and precious population. Without protected and suitable land, this unique breed risks disappearing quietly, taking with it an irreplaceable genetic, cultural, and living heritage.

The Nokota Experience allows us to fund the integration of 30 Nokota Horses from the kuntz Nokota ranch into Whiskey Road Reserve, 600 acres of private land ensuring their protection and preparing for the future.
In the meanwhile, the other hundred horses of the Kuntz herd is still looking for a permanent home.
A KEY PLAYER IN THE PRESERVATION OF THE BREED IN EUROPE

Before the immersion, the Nokota Experience team had the opportunity to meet the French Nokota horses at Blue Summer Ranch, a major contributor to the preservation of the breed in Europe.
